Djembe is one of the most interesting and popular ethnic drums. It has the shape of a goblet, its body is traditionally made of a single piece of wood, and the membrane is made of leather. Tensioning and adjustment is carried out using a rope system. It is believed that the djembe originated on the territory of the Mali Empire in the XIII century and soon penetrated into neighboring states: Guinea, Senegal, C?te d'Ivoire. It gained wide popularity in the 20th century, thanks to the group Le Ballet Africains - the National Ensemble of Guinea. Now djembe is popular not only in traditional music, but also in rock, reggae, r'n'b, dance music.

Playing technique :

The djembe is played with both hands. There are three main tones: low impact, high and slap. The player stands, while the drum is hung on a special belt or placed on a special stand. A small djembe can also be played while sitting, while the base of the drum is clamped between the legs. Playing the djembe requires a skillful alternation of focusing and dissipating the force of the blow with the hand: for high and low blows, tension is needed, for slapping, relaxation of the hand. Traditional rhythms are played with the palms; many introduce fingerplay using rolls, head friction, clicks, etc.
